PRODUCTION: Day 1 of filming

On the 24th October we did started filming. We did our first base tracks of Artist Melanie played by Amber performing in our music video. We took great precise detail when filming.

Here is a slide show of our first day of filming progress:

Base Track 1
Here is a teaser of what our potential base track may look like, nothing has been decide but watch this space.

Base Track 2

PLANNING:Test Shots

We went to Hampstead Heath to take test shots of potential locations where we want to shoot our scence. We focused on the base tracks as we see them to be the most important as it is the structure of our music video. We took various shots as when it comes down to the proper production we don't want to waste our filming time looking for locations, we rather get that planning stage all sorted.

Here below our the tests shots of base track, they are just snippets of potential base tracks location and it would be filmed.

Test shot photos

When we arrived at the location we saw this bridge and week automatically thought this will be effective in our music video. However, it turned out to be a cardboard cut out!!! Therefore we have resulted into not using a bridge in our music video however we have come up with an alternative.

PLANNING: Our Artist Bio

Melanie Symonds

Melanie was born in Lincoln on the 14th August 1990. She moved to London at the age of 17 to fulfil her dream of becoming a singer/ songwriter.  However, her progress into success has happened slow as she had to become a waitress in a small bistro in the West End. To get started she started busking at Trafalgar Square and oxford street. Yet by the end of 2005 nothing happened so she took drastic action to go on the X factor. Unfortunately,  she only made it to judges houses and was knocked out the competition. However, she didn't give up. A year later she went on The Voice but did't get noticed by the judging panel. Although, she went on both reality TV shows and weren't noticed by the judges she has now become recognised by Cherry Tree to promote her new song Guns and Horses.

Melanie has now become a youtube sensation because people are demanding more of her songs and they want her songs to have videos to it. Guns and Horses will be the first of many videos to become.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin analyses music videos and looks particularly at how they are structured and presented. He feels that all music videos are structured around lyrics. Therefore, it gives a visual representation of what the artist is trying to convey to the audience.

He Thinks that all music videos tend to follow a start, middle and end structure. In music videos the artist tend to be the participant or the narrator. Furthermore, he implies that singers look directly into the camera which breaks the rule of the fourth rule.

Andrew Goodwin says that there are three way in which music videos promote their song:

Illustrate: Florence and Machine.

This is an illustrate video because the lyrics reflect the video and the dancing expresses the artists feelings together with the meaning in the lyrics.

Amplify: A-team - Ed Sheeran.

This video shows the storyline to the lyrics but doesnt reflect it in the way illustate videos do. It mostly picks out a line that is significant and a major theme.

Disjuncture: Sweedish house mafia.

Disjuncture videos don't have a link between the video and lyrics. For example, in this video it has dogs in it which doesnt relate to thye meaning of the song.

PLANNING:Prop Ideas

Picnic Setup:

For the set up of the picnic we agreed to have some coloured paper lanterns which will hang from the tree above, as this creates a nice romantic setting which will reflect upon the music video itself. The inspiration for this setup has been drawn form the image above.

In addition I thought within the picnic we could have some wine glasses with dry ice to create the smoke effect, as we think this will create a great romantic atmosphere. Moreover, dry ice will be used throughout our music in order to create a mysterious mystical effect. However dry ice is very hard to find and is also expensive so at the moment this is just an idea.

Also the use of tealite candles scattered around the woods as the main female solo artist goes on her adventure to find the perfect man, would enhance the mise en scene and the tealite candles would also help to create that mysterious, mystical atmosphere we are trying to create. Furthermore in some cultural's or in some religious backgrounds light a tealite candle as a form of  of prayer or a wish for something they desperately desire.

PLANNING:Fainting inspiriation

I recently watched Carly Rae Jepsen - call me maybe music video. This scene inspired me the most that I it  think would be effective in our music video. The reason is because it reflects her thoughts of what her relationship would be like with the person she admires. At first when she falls, we, the audience feel  mortified for her but when she goes into how she feels for him, we establish how much she likes him as she fantasise of having that relationship demonstrated in the most well known romantic novel of all time. When she gets up from her fantasy the audience feels the urge that they are suited together as they have a laugh and a joke. In this particular scene like the editing when demonstrating that she is going into her imagination, as it is done subtly and not over the top, if it was it would spoil the aspect of the music video and make it cheesy. The video is similar to our concept, we might want to intertextualise this scene into our music video so we can get the same effect that it creates on the audience  nut instead of it going into the novel like this music video it will shots of the artist and the actor participating in activities, until she wakes up and he helps her up from the floor.

PLANNING: Health and Safety

We had to fill out the health and safety form to show that I can acknowledge the code and regulation of what is expected of me when filming. I signed as i am fully aware of what is expected of me and we definitely follow all the following rules. Without signing this form we will not be issued the cameras, therefore we will not be able to film our music video.

Furthermore, we were tested to see whether we can operate the JVC GY-HM100 camera and attach it to the tripod.

Health and Safety Tutorial

During lesson, we had a health and safety tutorial in which we were reminded of how to use the equipment safely and effectively. We also learnt how to use the camera for example; how to switch from auto focus to manual focus.

In addition I signed a contract in which I agreed to not post the video up onto any public space on the internet due to copyright reasons.

PLANNING:King's Cross - St' Pancras

We went to Kings Cross to see the water feature again and to take footage of it. there was a problem that was faced and that the larger fountains was getting its plumbing fix. We are hoping that the fountain gets fixed in time as will look effective during the last scene of the music video and where they are dancing. If it does not fixed in time, we have a contingency plan at the ready!!!

Audience Feedback

Beforehand as a group we decided we would like to get some audience feedback on what they would expect from the song "Ellie Goulding - Guns And Horses" in the music video. Therefore we got a member of the public to listen to the video and tell us the sort of themes they would expect in the video.

Audience Research

The research in which we carried out was the type of music young people were interested in and what they would expect from an "electropop/folktronica music video!"

Name: Unknown
Age: 16

Name: Unknown
Age: 16

Name: Unknown
Age: 16

Name: Unknown
Age: 17

From the research provided above, we found that most young people were more interested in R&B/Pop music, people weren't sure what folktronica and electropop was, once we said our original artist some were unsure what to expect in a music video or never heard of her. In addition most young people don't watch the music videos they prefer to hear the song itself!
Music Videos

What Is the Function of Music videos?

Music videos support the uses and gratification theory because the audience gain a sense of entertainment and enjoyment from watching the music video because they can either empathise with the message the artist is trying to convey. Furthermore, it is a visual represenation of what the lyrics are about and how it can be interoperated.

The artists use music videos to advertise their music further and engage their audience to their songs. Moreover, The artists are interacting with their audience through their videos by at time singing and looking into the camera to make it direct and personal.

Making music videos creates an image for the artist which gives the artist an individual USP (Unique selling point).

Technical Skills

Technical Skills From AS

In AS i learned a lot about film making and all the technical sides to it. One of the areas that I learned and really improved on is editing.

I have learned the different types of cuts in the that are used in films and produced it in my own video (jump cuts, match cuts, shot reverse shot...).  I have really improved on using the program, final cut pro as I now understand how to create, effects such as slow motion, colour correction, and create effects like position two or more videos in one shot.

Sound Editing for me is one of the hardest parts of producing a film because you have to have multi different sound layers and have to be editing on time with the video. It was one of my weaknesses but improved and gained a lot of knowledge about how to combine sound to the video to create a good film. I've now learned the types of the sound edits like foley sounds, digetic and none digetics sounds, and sound bridge.

We used JVC video cameras to film our videos which gave me a stronger knowledge of using the different technical functions on the camera. For example, the focus on the camera, the exposure, and using the zoom in two ways, using the ring and the buttons. I learned about the camera movements e.g  panning, tracking, and tilting shots.

PLANNING:Inspiration for our music video number 1

What I like about the intro of Pink's video Blow me one last kiss is the picnic scene of the two lovers. We are planning to incorporating a picnic scene in our music video to represent the relationship of the artist and her love interest. What I most like about it, is the shot types and the shot reverse shots as we go back and forth to convey their facial expression to the audience to express their on screen romance. Furthermore, the close ups on the artist and her lover makes it seem so intimate, therefore it looks like there is a real romantic connection between the two and that's what we want in our music video, if we can't manage to tell love story to the audience we are not fulfilling our concept or our brief of frustrating love can be.  therefore we wont be targeting our audience of young teenage girls ageing from 14-17 year old that our frustrated by love and our wider of audience that our into romance, chick-flicks or chick licks.
An establishing shot of them two having a Picnic  Look at the body language between the two, they choose that there is chemistry between the two. It sets the mood and atmosphere. Furthermore, since it's the first shot, the audience are aware of what to expect.

The shot reverse shot of Pink and her lover, as you can see it is close up and that it shows intimacy between the pair.

The props in this music video is used to a minimum, due to the fact that the, we, the audience, can't see it. However we will be using props for our music video to set the atmosphere.
The wine glass as the prop.

The effects added during the post production of this music video is that there is black and white effect to make seem old, we are not going for that as we want to capture the young audience and we want to make seem that young love is still alive and worth having.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Our Video

Rizzle Kicks - Music Video From AS

Strengths:

The shot types that we used were well framed, for example the the stereo was positioned in the centre of the video. Moreover, we followed the rule of three as we made sure that the artists was framed accurately within the shots (medium shots, close ups, long shots).

The lip-syncing to the video is on edited on time and has a strong connection between the artists performance and music.

The lighting thats is needed for the green screen is strong because you don't see any shadows behind at any points which is helpful because when it comes to editing we won't see any green parts to the video.

Weaknesses:

The first obvious weakness to our video is the green screen. We didn't edit the background of all the shots and therefore lead to a lack of good mise-en-scene. The video doesn't show the area and background that the artists are in which let down the video as a whole.

At some points of the video, the shots are cut a little early just before the artists are going to sing which gave it an unprofessional look.

Another weakness is that one of the shots at 1:02 goes of the green screen at the corner of the video.

Pitch

PLANNING:StoryBoard

PLANNING:Our Animatic of Guns and Horses

Here is our animatic for Guns and Horses. The animatic gives us a rough idea what our music video is going to look like. It at gives us a chance to go back and change certain shots. From this process we learned that we need a lot more shots. Back to the drawing board!

RESEARCH: Categorise of the range of audience in our Society.

When targeting a certain audience or when trying to establish their target audience, they are categorised in a psychographic profile, this is used in many media products especially useful when a company is launching a new product to new consumers.

But how does it relate to Music Videos?

The Psychographic profile allows the artist to create an image or brand that will be accepted to their target audience.  Therefore, the music video must please their target audience so they can stimulate sales of the single, as they can obtain money and profit.

Reflection Of Blogging

Here I have included a "Vlog" discussing my most favorite blogs and some key pointers for future blogging!

RESEARCH: How Ellie Goulding Uses Social Networking Sites

As you can see, Ellie Goulding has a Facebook page in order to connect and engage with her fans. Facebook helps to keep her fans updated by posting her whereabouts  tour dates and latest album releases to a staggering '1,820,732' who like her page!

Ellie has revealed an extract of lyrics everyday for the past 10 days up to the release date of her new album 'Halycon' - This has been used in order to engage and interact with her fans and keep them reminded in order to increase sales and profits.

Above, Ellie has posted an advertisement of her upcoming tour date in December when she will perform her latest album 'Halycon' LIVE with extra special guests. Facebook enables promotion companies to aim and target a specific genre of fans. For example people who LIKE Ellie Goulding' page want to know the information and content provided, Therefore she connects with a larger fan base in order to promote upcoming tours. This increases sales and again profits.

In addition, Ellie also has a Twitter account in which again she can use in order to engage, interact and connect with her fans. Fans can also get up close and personal in many attempts to get a RT (Re - Tweet) or a mention from Ellie herself.

Above is a series of Ellie's latest 'Tweets', as you can see she recently tweeted she was "Up early as hell to sing live on 3fm." This allows fans to create a bond/familiarity, as though they know Ellie Goulding. Social networking sites may create a closing the gap effect, between the artist and fans. Fans might have that connection with their favorite artist they would never have without the use of social networking sites.

RESEARCH: Types Of Audience's (Psychographics)

Psychographics are used particularly by markets in order for them to target their potential customers. This is particularly useful when planning a music video, as companies can categories their audience into eathier, mainstreamers, succeeders, reformers or aspirers. With these psychographic profiles of potential audiences, they can then assume what particular category may be more interested in what they would like to see and buy, when producing and distributing new products.

  • Succeeders: People who are successful and self confident. They tend not to buy aspirational products and follow they owideas of what is a good product. They tend to be the older population of consumers who have achieved the status and have no desire to seek status symbols. Do not feel the need to buy or show off expensive items.

  • Reformers: Creative, caring, not brand conscious. They seek the quality of life rather than owning objects most people desire. They are intellectual and most educated.

  • Aspirers: People who want to "get on". Tend to be the younger population who want all the cool gadgets on the market such as the I Phone 5 in today's current market. They love shopping and spending money they don't particularly have. Seek Money and Power without necessarily having a job.

  • Mainstreamers: The largest segment, conformists who buy "safe", big brand products. Plan for the futer. Already have pension plans. Tend to not stand out from the crowd. Tend to not wear designer clothing.

In our particular music video we have discussed we will be targeting "Aspirers" as we are targeting a younger audience. This is because the theme of our music video is "LOVE". Therefore, this would attract an audience of young teenage females.

RESEARCH:Ellie Goulding website

Here Below are screen shots of Ellie Goulding's official artist page.
Here is a link to her official site: http://elliegoulding.com/

Why would an artist have an official site?
The simple answer is that it is away for the artist to communicate with their fans, by letting them know about tour dates , lyrics to her songs, her biography and what she is doing now. However, the official page is not is personal to the audience, it just information they they expect general fans or people that have had a sudden interest in Ellie Goulding. If they want to connect with the artist further they would do this by following them on twitter or by liking their page on facebook.

On Ellie Goulding 's official site she has a store page (http://store.universal-music.co.uk/restofworld/artists/ellie-goulding/icat/elliegoulding/) where we are directed to universal music store and on to Ellie Goulding's section. Here we are able to buy and download Ellie Gouldings singles. Also a Fan can pre-order her latest single, which isn't released till October 8th.

PLANNING: Audience

Above we have created a slide show that demonstrates our potential target audience. We have chosen to target the teenage female audience. Here we have ateenage girl called Shannon who is 16 years old. She is free spirited. She loves the concept of money and having the latest fashion trends.

PLANNING:Storyline of Our music video.

“Where fantasy and real life collide together to indulge in the destination of romance.”
Our storyline for our music video is about teenage love and how it comes together. We have chosen to have a fantasy feel to the music video because it will attract the audience of the music video, but also the artist embark on a journey to pluck up the courage to ask the guy of her dreams out. A she prefers to imagine every thing rather than do something about it.
Our music video is a cathartic music video we express this emotions that many people experience in their lives. Furthermore it is appropriate to the uses and gratification theory as at the end of the music video we are happy that she asked him out.
The structure for our music video is amplification as we emphasise  the lyrics of:
'I'll do it all for you"
Which is expressing her feelings for her dream guy and finds way how she can attract him.

PLANNING: Analysis of 3 music videos that influence our music video

Finding 3 music videos that will influence our music video was really hard to find.
A) because Folktronica music is not easy to find in the mainstream music video shows  or in the charts.
B) there not much establish artist that have created music videos they are mostly up and coming artist
that are waiting to be establish through Youtube.

However, I have come up with 3 music videos that I have chosen that will influence our music video. They are:
Katy Perry - Wide Awake

I have chosen this song because the genre of this music is electronica. Electronica makes up the genre of foltronica music. What I really like about this music video is the change between real life and fantasy. I like the effects of how it changes as the camera does a pan from ( real life Katy Perry) to fantasy Katy Perry. The make up is made to add to he atmosphere. I think this will look good in our music video as it will help tell the story of our music video concept. The lantern in the music video plays a key significance in our music video and we will definitely adapt it into our music video  because in the lyrics: "every fire is a lesson learn". This will then follow into the imagination part of the concept and she takes a journey into the darkness with a lantern or candle to find that she has entered her dream. Then editing in the music flows through to each shot as it tells a story. The structure of this music video is amplification as each the video gives deeper meaning to the lyric because it appears that she can see better in her thoughts than in reality. The main parts that we will mostly adapt in our music video the beginning part of the music video but we will incorporate it the middle section of the music video. What I also like this music video is that editing is obvious as we get slow motion shots of her running and the a fantasy effect as we see sparks in the hands, Which that will intrigue our audience.
Taylor Swift - Love story,
I have chosen this music video because it resembles the clear storyline that we are going for. The editing in the intro of the music video straight away establishes the relationship between the artist - Taylor Swift and the young man sitting on the grass. In this video there is a fantasy feel as we are transported to the Victorian era but its still not enough that we go with the genre. The editing is slow and the beat with our song choice is fast. However the beginning of the sing it is slow therefore it would be best if we use the beginning aspect of the music video as our into. Looking at the mise en scene I like the artist wondering through the forest using a lantern. The body language between is what we are looking for. The close up of them holding hands in the field promotes the love story between the two and that's the relationship that we want on screen and the relationship and story our target audience should automatically pick up.

Yasmin - On My Own

This music video will influence the reality aspect of our music video. What major influenced me is the location shots of her walking down a cannal. Those shots are typical everyday london shots that can easliy be created. The body language Tasmin the artist is portraying has added to the concept of reality because she is wonderding around just thinking of what might, even though we are not shown that it is clearly demonstrated in this way. In the edting they have used blur effect which can be adapted in our music video because it can show the indication of her dreaming. I love the base tracks in the music videos because they are simple but yet effective to show the emotion of the artist of being lost and confused. The editing of the various shots types can influence our music video because it fits in well together but also adds the factor the music video contain the artist looking directkly at the camera and our not always based on the storyline.

I have chosen these 3 music video because they have elements in common. The theme is that all the female artist need to get over certain obstacles to face what they really want. Furthermore, the all indicate the characteristics of how the artist should behave in our music video.

PLANNING: Questions to HMV and the general public

As a group we will travelling to HMV to research further into consumers and to establish what type of people are interested into our genre. This will allow us to get a further understanding into our target audience as we will get more knowledge on our target audience and our wider audience.

Here are a list of questions we are planning to ask:

  1. How would you describe Folktronica/electropop?
  2. What would expect to find in an Folktronica/electropop music video?
  3. What are the props you would expect to see in a music video?
  4. What type of costumes would you expect the artist/participant/narrator be wearing
  5. What shot types would you see?
  6. What is the editing like?
  7. What is the major occurring theme in a Folktronica/elecropop song and music video?
  8. What type of people would buy Folktronica/electropop music?
  9. What are the CD sales for Folktronica/electropop?
  10. What type of artists/bands are most popular in the Folktroinca/electropop genre?
  11. How is the music industry looking at the moment?
  12. What would be the USP for the Folktronica/electropop genre?
Then we will talk to the general public to get a generalisation of the audience and our target audience. Furthermore, we would also ask them what they would expect to find in a  music video.

PLANNING: Analysing Guns and Horses Lyrics

lyrics suggestions

Here we have started coming with ideas what are music video is going to entail and include just by annotating the lyrics. We have discovered our interpretation of the meaning of the lyrics and we have come up to a conclusion that the narrator/ the artist is representing a teenager, in particular a girl, who is frustrated that she can not express her feelings to the guy that she admirers as he has been in a relationship where he has been badly hurt. Hence:

' know you have been burned, But every fire is a lesson learned...'
Our music video is going to into the mind of the teenage girl and see what she imagining with a relationship with him.
The music video would go into a mystical fantasy world were her dreams come true. However, in reality, he hardly notices her and she feels lost and shy.
At the end our music video will have a conclusion, as she will pluck up the courage to ask him out, but the audience will be unaware whether he had said yes or no
The main of theme of our music video is to encourage teens that what ever they imagine or their dreams can come true. It is down to plunging into their deeps fear and getting over with.

Also, from analysing the music videos we have come up with some potential location shoots that will highlight these lyrics. Even though we are going fior an amplification music video the last stanza we be interpretated through dance as we have chosen to have contempoary dancing in the kings cross location or towerbridge. The location will emphasis the lyrics:

'I'll do it all for you'
because of the water feature.

RESEARCH AND PLANNING: Analysis of Guns and Horses

Applying Goodwin's theory of music videos, the structure of  Guns and horses Music video resembles a disjuncture video because the meaning of the lyrics does not reflect in the music. However, there is a connection them between the lyric ' we've got our guns and horses' in the music video they demonstrate this by creating a civil war battle field and having the iconic image of a horse appearing in the music video. But this theme does not run all the way through because we focus more on the artist (Ellie Goulding) wondering through the forest, we are unclear whether she is trying to find something or that she is lost and trying to discover who she is. We get an idea of this when she is made to have a mystical glow around in a low angle shot of her. Furthermore, he artist (Ellie Goulding) looks directly at the camera to make it personal to the her intended target audience.

Applying Carol Vernalis theory the editing is obvious as there are slow motion shots of the dancers and that are effects on Ellie Goulding in the forest being enlightened. However at the beginning of the music video it has slow edits. As there is a slow zoom in to Ellie Gouldings face, at the same time as the beat of the music. In some shots we see Ellie Gouldings fully body, but then we  quickly
cut to her face, which helps draws attention to the her. Although at the beginning there are slow edits, when the beat picks up the editing becomes much faster this indicates that music video has been shaped around the music video.

There are various base tracks in the music video. It can be argued that most of the music video is shaped around the base tracks.  Below are screen shots of the base tracks they I have spot in the Guns and Horses Music video.

There are  jump cuts in the music video, the effect of this is to once again to again the audience attention. Also it exaggerates the beat of the music and enforces the audience to feel the upbeat notion of the song.

Applying Laura Mulveys theory to Guns and Horses. In the Guns and Horses music video the male gaze theory doesn't apply to it. As there are no unnecessary shots of women n showing desirable body parts. However, Ellie Goulding has created a female that  seems to be lost and vulnerable because she is wondering through a park, trying to look for something. Is it suggest that women, in particular, girls that wish they can be in a relationship that is reciprocal found it hard to understand and feel lost and lonely.

Moreover the use of the men and women wearing civil war attire imply that love is a battle Field, but in this case Ellie Goulding does no where she stands as she feels lost in the middle of it.

How is our music video going to be different.

Our music video will be different then this because with apt to have an amplification music video. Therefore we want to narrate the story of feeling frustrated and in love. Even the though the title of the song is Guns and Horses we are not going to have Guns or Horses in the music video. Neither are we going to have dancers in the background expressing the artist feelings. The artist is going to do this by acting it out.

At the end of the music video we are going to come to some sort of conclusion as the artist is going to talk to him. In the Guns and Horses music video we are faced by Ellie Goulding spinning around with the camera on set and we can see the crew in the background.

We have chosen to shot in the forest but this is only when we have the mystical enchanted scenes, where the artist is dreaming. But reality we will be using markets stools where it gives of and indie feel to the music video, but just to represent normal everyday life.

The effects of the smoke machine is not going to happen as it will be an unnecessary aspect at it would be as if we are copying and not fulfilling our own music video.

PLANNING: Chosen Song Lyrics - Ellie Goulding

GUNS AND HORSES

You're so quiet But it doesn't faze me You're on time You move so fast, makes me feel lazy

Let's join forces
We've got our guns and horses I know you've been burned But every fire is a lesson learned

I left my house Left my clothes Door wide open, heaven knows You're so worth it, you are

But I wish I could feel it all for you I wish I could be it all for you If I could erase the pain Maybe you'd feel the same I'd do it all for you I would, I would, I would, I would

Let's type words Because they amount to nothing Play it down Pretend you can't take what you found But you found me On a screen you sit at permanently

I left my house
Left my clothes Door wide open, heaven knows You're so worth it, you are

But I wish I could feel it all for you I wish I could be it all for you If I could erase the pain Then maybe you'd feel the same I'd do it all for you I would, I would, I would, I would

It's time to come clean And make sense of everything It's time that we found out who we are 'Cause when I'm standing here in the dark I see your face in every star

But I wish I could feel it all for you I wish I could be it all for you If I could erase the pain Then maybe you'd feel the same I'd do it all for you I would, I would, I would, I would, I would

I'd do it all for you, I would I'd do it all for you, I would I'd do it all for you, I would I'd do it all for you, I would I'd do it all for you

Reflection On Progress
